You do not have to join the military, but you must register your name with the government. In case there is a draft, which is highly unlikely, your name will be put into the lottery to be chosen to join the military.

The draft is only used when its needed....its not. And if you're a student, you get immunity. And if you're too old by then, they probably wouldnt take you anyway. Even the draft has standards.

You have to register for the draft when you turn 18 but US does not have a draft. We have a volunteer army.
The purpose of registering is just in case there is a national emergency which will require a sudden build up of our armed services.
I registered when I was 18 and i am currently 42 and have never been in the military.
The draft is only used during a time of severe crisis. The current US Military is a 100% completely voluntary force. So please come and enjoy life here.

From what I know serving in the US Army is mandatory. You can serve if you like to but there is no must. What you heard is probably the US Army Reserve. The Army Reserve is more like a part-time job that enables you to keep your civilian career while you continue to train near home and serve your country. Many professionals as well as college students are Soldiers in the Army Reserve.
