I was recently granted asylum in the US. The law says that after 1 year of staying in the US after being granted asylum, a person can file for adjustment of status to become a permanent resident. Now, does it mean that I have to stay here for a full year without going abroad? I was planning to go on vacation to Europe for couple of weeks this summer. Once I come back, will I be required to wait another full year before filing for permanent resident, or I can still file after a year since the day I was granted asylum?
Answer:
You are eligible one year from the date you are granted asylum. Your physical presence is not in question. Don't for get your travel refugee document.
