The agent at the airport stamped passport for entry and wrote B2 only on it and did put any date for return. What is that supposed to mean that visitor can stay in US for 6 months or what?

I would suggest going to the CBP office (Customs and Border Patrol) at the aiport. They can correct I-94 cards issued with errors.
You should in no case stay beyond the six months.
