What changes should we do to reflect the fact that we are a bilingual nation?
Answer:
I actually like the idea of being a bilinual nation, but one language should be primary. And everyone should learn that language (English).
Our country is divided enough as it is. We don't need half the people speaking one language & half the people speaking another!
I also think every child should be taught a secondary language. The kids that speak Spanish at home must learn English, but should also have Spanish classes so they learn to speak Spanish properly. And we should incourage English speaking kids to learn Spanish. (For some reason, many want to learn French, or German though few will ever have an opportunity to use it.)
That is not true. We portray the image of a bilingual nation because of the over abundance of mexicans. If we ship out the vast majority of them that aren't legal, we wont give off that image.
We are not a bilingual nation. English is the native language of the United States and in my opinion should be the official language.
Please specify what do you mean by "bilingual"...English and...???
Also I consider that the person who said English is the "native language" meant to say that Englsh is the most spoken language and should be recognized as the official one, but IT IS NOT native to this land.
Make all the illegals learn English so they too can be bilingual.
I dont think we should. I have always believed that everyone in the world is welcome here but you need to speak the language. English. If I go to germany I dont expect them to speak my language for me. I would expect to learn theres.
I am assuming you are referring to Canada? If so, I find it laughable that it is referred to as a bilingual country, but 90% of the country cannot speak French. I am NOT French. I am actually from South Africa and have lived here for 7 years. Having been raised in a country that was bilingual at the time, every person was expected to at least be able to express themselves in the other language. There was no translation into English when the other official languages were used on TV. I think it should be enforced that every Canadian should learn French. You cannot call this a bilingual country when everything points to a unilingual populace.
Only two langauges are spoken in the USA?
I believe that you are mistaken.
We should force everyone to learn English.
I didn't realize we were a bilingual nation.
What other language besides English should we recognize as part of our nations heritage? French
We aren't a bilingual nation! We should adopt a law making English the official language! And my Puerto Rican husband and family all agree with this!
i bet you just woke up from a dream bc i don't see where you put source for your statement?
United states of America i say over 90% the population speaks English that sound like a Nightmare for You
Require everyone to speak English and only English. Do not allow business to be done in any other language but English. Do not allow any documents of any legal nature to be printed in any language other than English. It used to be that way. When my great, great grandmother came from Germany she didn't speak a word of English. She learned it and fast because she had to. My grandfather was born of parents who were French Canadian. They came south and learned English out of necessity because no one catered to them. Why do we have to speak anything but English? I'll bet if someone were moving from US to a non-English speaking country he would need to learn the language of that country. They would not cater to him.
If we were to go to a second language what would it be? Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog? There are millions in this country who speak each of these languages so which do we do all of them? I speak English well I am native to this country; why should I need to speak to someone in any language other than English?
Personally, I'm tired of calling a company..."press one for English." "Marque el dos para Espanol." Or, going to the cash machine..."select language."
If we become a true bilingual country, the latin americans won't care about learning English, the most widely spoken language in the world. Then we will eventually have to force ourselves to speak only Spanish. Then we lower more standards so kids can all be equal. Then they win the country.
English only please....PERIOD!
Why do we have to be bilingual?
There are many different languages spoken in my country, not just English and Spanish, so what makes you think that the Spanish language is anything special?
America's MAIN language is English.
Why should we have to learn their language to live in OUR country?
I do have a good point....
English should be the dominant language of the US but government cannot fully control that. For example, French used to be the International language prior to WWII.
We are not a bi-lingual nation. We are probably a 167(or so)-lingual nation. In order to be on the same page we made English the common unifying language. It's only the Spanish speakers who are trying to cause more division and seperation. More will probably follow suit to make it no longer the United States.....but a place of total division. It won't be enough anymore to try and understand and deal with race, sex, culture and relegious differences.....now language will muddle the efforts even more and cause more problems. Happy now? I sure hope you're ready to tackle learning all the other languages as well because they're gonna want to exercise their right to not learn English too. It will be one disfunctional world all wrapped up on one area of a continent. A foreigner in your own country.
Who is "we"?
What country are you talking about?
What country are you talking about, and what are the two languages that you have in mind that should take precedent?
I know, for example, in the United States, they speak MANY languages.
The USA is not bilingual, i guess. But if it were true, all the citizen should have both languajes, the english speakers as well as the spanish speakers.
Maybe if that were true, then there would be no need to stat if the spanish is one of the oficial languajes.
In my point of view this is a lost cause.
I am mexican, i live in Mexico, and i am so worried about MY people living in the USA because they need work and money to survive.
But i guess a productive cause would be, those big immigrant organizations trying to teach english to the immigrants so they could fit and adapt better to the country and the environment that have received them, and make it easier to be welcome.
what language would that be? we have Polish, Italians, Germans, french, people from the middle east. not to mention we have people from all over the world. so what language should we chose? they came here knowing English is spoken, let them learn English.
We're not a bilingual nation...at least we shouldn't be.
I don't think the USA is a bilingual nation, but I think learning a second language (whatever it is) in an advantage for anyone who wants to either have more opportunities or travel abroad.
We are not a "bilingual nation." We are an English speaking nation that has lots of people speaking many other languages.
I assume by bilingual you mean English and Spanish. What about all the other languages?
You're in Venezuela, right?
A bilingual nation?
English only please! Learn our language or go back home!
