Is it wrong to make all immigrants learn English if they spent all their life speaking another language?

Answer:
No, it is not wrong, because immigrants who do not make the effort to learn the language will be forever limited in their ability to be successful in this country. Failure to assimilate means failure to advance. Besides the personal tragedy for the individual, not speaking the language inevitably means an increasing dependency on government support because they will not be able to adequately support themselves.
yep its wrong its also illegal have you learned Cherokee or Navajo?
They're just too lazy to learn English !
No it's not wrong,we all must be able to communicate so I think we all need to be able to speak one language.
noooo if they wanna come hear they gotta play by our rules.
no, it's not wrong to make them learn the language of the country they're trying to live in. Yeah, so what if they spent their entire lives speaking some other language but now they're in this country and they need to be able to speak our language. The same would go if I decided I wanted to move to Mexico or France. I would have to learn Spanish or French and I've only ever spoken English my entire life. Adaptation!!
If they move to an English speaking country, they should know at least basic English.
For assimilation purposes I see why we should all speak the same language.
Many people do not have the capacity to learn a second language. Some people can barely speak their own language.

However, immigrants should be compelled to take classes in which certain words are taught, such as Stop, Construction Ahead, No Parking, et al; for safety purposes.
If that was the case, then could we who speak english go to another country and expect them to accommodate us? Could I go to Mexico or South America and expect everyone I meet to speak english?. Or France? Russia, Japan, or China?

Got to look at both sides of the argument. If you expect someone to speak your language when they go to your country, you should have the courtesy to do the same.
As I have said before; if you are in my country, you will speak my language, if I am in your country, I will speak your language.
why would it be wrong? do you think we should be required to learn their language instead?

if i were going to move to another country, i should be able to speak their language, not the other way around
Of course you need to learn the language of a country if you have decided that you want to be a citizen there, and why would any country want to accept you if you did not show proper respect for that country by learning their language.
When you take up residence in a new country you should respect the standards of that place and put their customs before those of the country you came from. You can still keep the language and customs of your old country without disrespecting those of the new.
No. English is the official language of the USA.

I have known many successful immigrants, and they all tell me, if you want to succeed the USA, you need to become fluent in English.
NO// What you speak in your own home is your business, but out among the public you speak the language of the country you are in. When in America speak American language ,ENGLISH. When in Mexico speak Spanish.
No. But is it right to have taxpayers fund interpreters, multilingual education, and multilingual signage & documentation for immigrants who choose NOT TO IMPROVE THEIR ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE in a country where ENGLISH IS THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE?
If you're going to move to another country, you should have a functional understanding of the language. If an American was to move to France or Germany or Japan, they would be expected to learn the language. Maybe with older people it's more difficult, but they should still at least try to communicate effectively.
It is wrong to expect every other citizen of this country to learn immigrant's languages so that they can be comfortable living here. Our culture is one that has historical rewarded those who are willing to adapt and learn. That's why immigrants come here. If speaking their native language is that important, they can choose to stay in their native country.
I beleive it is to advantage to speak english in order to do well in this country. The immigrants I have met who never learned english are exploited by their employers and recieve little or no wages and overall abused and used. The ones I met who do understand english fare better and are treated better and people are less likely and unable to take advantage of them. All in All, if they come here for a better life, my advice is learn english if you do not want to be scammed by the local corperations and want to bring your self out of poverty. Avoid learning english at your own peril and if you wish to remain poor in the US.

I also believe as a born citizen in this country and American English being my native tongue, I feel it is wrong to move to some states to feel and be treated like a foriegner in my own land due to the fact I do speak the country's main tongue, yet I am surrounded by those who do not understand it, refuse to learn it and treat me like the illegal alien for not understanding their language. It makes no sense at all.
Just as wrong as it is to have them come here... when they spent all their life somewhere else.
No. Plain and simple this is an English speaking country which should be respected. A person always needs to learn new skills and things to better themselves. If I lived in Mexico or Spain do you think they would think it is wrong for me to learn Spanish even though I spent my entire life speaking English? I think not!
No, its not. If they don't want to learn it, they can always go back to their spanish-speaking country.
No
It is not wrong since no one is forced to come to America, It
is wrong however to burden Americans with having to learn
Spanish to accommodate them.
This is the United States of America, we speak english here. If you can't learn to speak english go back where you came from. If I go to another country, I would at least make an attempt to have a rudimentary understanding of that language. I would not expect them to learn english. My realatives learned english when they came here.

And we have the right to say who comes into our country, you have a lock on the doors of your house, so we should have locks on the doors of our country.
English is the voice and communication of this country--USA. If you leave your homeland and come to the USA--might help to speak english to get along with your neighbor. English is taught around the world. It should be a requirement for entring this country. New York City has over 100 written driving exams for people who do not read english. Why should we have to cater to people who want to migrate to the USA and refuse to conform. . Turn of the centry immigrants learned english and it was accepted that you learn the words of the land to succeed. The native American indians learned english. The language of all passenger pilots is english..world wide.
Is it wrong to make me learn Spanish just because some illegal immigrants don't want to learn English?
No, it's wrong to think that because you go to a foreign country that people should speak your native language to you.
If they want to become citizens, the law already requires it. Otherwise, it should be up to them. Most of them will naturally want to.

We can help them learn English by welcoming them to our communities.

The more languages we all learn, the better.
Yes, it is wrong. Why would you expect an English speaking country be burdened with trying to decipher what you are saying. Immigrating here and not learning the language indicates you really do not want to assimilate, simply take advantage of the benefits.

The government should not be burdened with hiring both English and Spanish speaking people for the same job, publishing everything in both English and Spanish.

For generations people from all countries have immigrated here and learned the language. Why should Mexicans be treated differently?
This is a ver interesting question. I do not believe it's wrong for immigrants to have to learn to speak english even if they have spent their lifes speaking another language. When I moved to Puerto Rico at the age of 19 I had to learn spanish. Why should I expect everyone their to speak english just for me? No culture or country is going to change their language just to accomidate you. I am now 23 and live in the Philippines. I have to learn to speak Tagalog. This is their country their language and if i wish to funtion in their society i must speak their language. As for immigrant if they wish to function our american society they must speak our language as they would expect us to speak their language in their country.
