Clinton administration. I went nuts when people told me whats the big deal. If the economy is growing, why should we care if he broke the law. Well now we have another President with the same mentallity. I doubt those who defend Clinton feel the same way. Its a slippery slope. If you violate a law you feel is unjust, when will it stop. Individuals should not judge if a law is just or not, because personal greed and bias would interfer. As for the person who brought up slavery, the law is out in the open and written on paper. We could now argue if its morally correct and remove it. If the law is not strictly enforced, how are we going to enforce personal interpretation. How can we argue with the law when its not enforced evenly. FOr the individual who claims illegal immigrants put in more than they take out is ignorant of the cost of illegal immigrants. DO illegal immigrants use mass transportation, sewage system, sidewalks. every addition to a city increase the cost of maintaining, upgrading and construction of infrastructure. THe cost is either paid in full or subsidize by our tax dollars. The cost is also high. What paltry tax would not cover their existence here. Any dollar figure on how much illegal immigrants pay in taxes is dubious. Since this involves an illegal activity the true number of illegal immigrants and the percentage of illegal immigrants paying in taxes are only a guess. Lets demonstrate how much city service cost. Dar came up with $10,000 to send a kid through school for 1 year in California. That probably greater than what an average illegal immigrant may contribute in taxes. SOme who argue with them come up with figures grater than $5,000. So tell me, does illegal immigrant contribute more than they take in taxes. If you look who is actually carrying this country, its the middle class. The poor never carried their own weight in taxes.

Let's look at it this way- are all crimes the same? Is murdering the same as J-walking? Do sometimes people have good reason for breaking the law, ex. medical marijuana?
it didn't. 6 years ago, i was living in Athens Alabama. a guy just stated a job. he was a young person. about 19 to 20. the kid had a few cents in his pocket when he went to walmart. he was hungry and ate a 59 cent donut. do you believe they had him arrested. and he had a fine of $10,000 dollars to pay? something wrong when illegals get away with murder, and some one starving goes to jail over a donut.

Giving birth to you was a crime and your parents are out and about free. They should be slapped. You are a saint. God forbid if you ever drove without a seat belt, or did over the speed limit, on the cell phone while driving. Eclipse, your mind is shadowed by an ECLIPSE.
It cracks me up that everyone is talking about immigration reform when they can't even enforce the current immigration laws. One of the requirements under the new bill is payment of a $5,000 fine. How many of these illegal immigrants who are working for less than minimum wage do you think have that amount of money laying around? I think the whole thing is just a distraction and a stall for time.
It became OK because some politician's business is profiting from it.

The only reason that we don't enforce immigration law is that some politician is profiting by it not being enforced.
You will note that Democrats are more likely to oppose securing our borders than Republicans... Democrats also oppose requiring proof of citizenship to vote. They must think that illegal immigrants vote for Democrats.
The long term cost of securing the borders is a small percentage of the social cost that will be incurred legitimizing 12 million illegal immigrants.We tried the amnesty once before, but then it was only estimated at 3 million. The only thing accomplished was 3 million more potential voters, and that is what the politicians are looking at. We're either going to have to open the borders or strenuously enforce the immigration laws. There can be no middle ground.
Really, Eclipse? The American Tax Payer is paying for these "crimes?" Because, I was under the impression (and you can go research this for yourself to find it true) that illegal immigration actually puts MORE money into taxes and takes less.
Think of it this way. For every illegal immigrant working a crap *** job, the have taxes taken out of their pay check. What is it, 22%? Higher?
But, since they are illegal immigrants, the only benefits they get from these taxes are emergency medical care. That's really the only thing the American tax payer pays for. This myth that they get welfare is insane. How do you suggest they apply for Welfare without social security numbers? With the fear of being caught?
And it isn't "ok" for the crime being committed. Some people, like myself, feel that certain immigrants should be ALLOWED to find freedom in this country because of the problems in their own countries, many problems WE are the cause of.
These same people, often times, do believe a man should be able to feed a starving family by stealing bread. If you notice, most democrats are more ok with illegal immigration.
We are also the ones that invented the welfare system, and gave food to those poor people who couldn't afford to feed their family. We are the ones the promote socialized health care for anyone under the age of 18, because we generally believe that children should get free medical care, regardless if their parents are rich or poor.
So, yah, I'm ok with certain illegal activities. Why do people like YOU focus so much on illegal immigrants, yet you don't mention people like Cheney getting away with Enron scandals, or other White Collar Crimes that are ignored daily.
Lets talk about the law.
There was a time when the law of this country said that one must return a man, who had escaped into a free state, to the man in a slave state, that claimed to own him. That was the law then, and many people obeyed that law because, well, it was the law..

is this really a question. it isn't ok there is just so much of it, and alot of businesses prosper because of it. the INS doesn't try, or simply can not get them all. so sometimes they look the other way as long as the illegal immigrants are law obeying.
It was never OK. Only ignorant people would say that breaking the law is OK.
It is never OK to illegally cross the border into another country regardless of "certain situations"
Illegal or "undocumented" immigrants also get most of the benifits Americans are entitled to but don't have to fork over income tax. Is that tax evasion as well? Follow where they spend $ and work and you will see who boggs down legislation.
This is a political question that changes with the politicians and has no legal basis because it is so politicized.
I think people see a lot of double standards. Look at lawmakers in Congress eg Tom DeLay.
No it is not ok for illegal immigration to take place, deportation and border fences will do little to stop people from sneaking into this country if there is still the promise of jobs and benefits.
Motive is the cause that moves people and induce a certain action. Intent in law is the planning and desire to perform an act.
Aaron is completely unjustified on his answer. Illegal immigrants are what they are...illegal. They are committing a crime by coming to our country and stealing health care, jobs and even land. Amnesty should also NEVER be offered. If you, as a citizen, notice or are suspicious of any illegals..report it. Trust me.I got a family of 8 deported 2 weeks ago. They arrived here about a year ago illegally. The feds thanked me for reporting it...let's all do the same!!

midcentury---I don't think its fair that illegal immagrints from another nation are allowed to get a credit card and a bank account and healthcare. I, being in debt from student loans, can not get a bank account or a credit card, and my average job does not give me healthcare. I think that sucks...our country needs to help its own citizens before we help other people...
