Why do people think from my question that I think we should all have to learn Spanish?
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...
I didn't say that we should all have to learn to speak Spanish. I simply wanted to know WHY it bothers you so much to see things in Spanish or to hear Spanish given as an option & HOW it affects you personally.
Nobody is talking about taking away your beloved English here.
Answer:
People in America react strongly to your question because it means to them that there are many non-English speaking brown people in their country that they do not want to put up with and your question reminds them of this. They want an English-only, white-only country.
It shows you the strength of their unity, I must say, to think that a language will separate people that much. My country has two official languages and fifteen that are recgonized by the country and yet we are the largest democracy in the world. Is America so much more fragile than India that it screams with such violence with the threat of diversity?
Because it no way encourages people to even attempt to learn English.
Back in the days, the Native American children were not allowed to speak their tongue in some schools. The Native American children leaded a revolt, a revolution and killed more than 700 Americans. Those children were only 9 to 20 years old, and yes the Americans treat them that badly. So, I think people should learn Spanish. Oh yeah, and they should learn Native American also.
They didn't want to answer your question, so they answer another one that is more convenient. Just like this question. You asked why there was a misunderstanding from your previous question. And the first answer was for the previous question, not for this question.
did you guys not win the spanish american war and the mexican american war. we have the same problem in canada - the french were beaten in quebec and english became the language. Well if you give an inch they will take a mile - and if they are your old enemies they will take ten miles
It bothers me to see those, that would like to be citizens of our country, not even attempt to respect the language it was founded on. Given such free access, some make no attempt to ever learn English.
Why should we have to learn Spanish, which isn't our native language, just to accommodate them? It's about as ignorant as me moving to Iran and expecting everything to be spelled out, and spoken, for me in English. It's disrespectful. I would make every attempt to learn their native language if I was seeking a home in their culture.
Edit to answer the poster's direct reference to me:
Yes, I read your question. It states "I wanted to know WHY it bothers you so much..."
My very first sentence starts off with, "It bothers me to see..."
You asked, I answered. I guess I forgot to write it in Spanish.
Me incomoda porque una cierta marca ninguna tentativa de aprender el inglés debido al español que es tan accesible.
There you go.
By allowing and facilitating the use of two languages you create seperation. Language is a way to unite a country as it makes us the same even though we have different backgrounds, color of skin etc. It also costs taxpayers money and does not encourage people to speak our language. I know people living in other countries that speak better English than the guy at the local convenience store. I woudl also imagine there is a cost associated with translating everything into a second language. Who pays for that and why should they?
A better question to ask is why do people think your a condescending liberal, feel free to use that one;)
I came to the US from Italy, I had to learn English in order to progress as a person why can't you? My parents (older) they don't understand English very well but they attempt because there is no other way so they learned at least how to be understood. Sorry that's my opinion.
It does bother me some. I live in southern california and I think it is a problem not to have one primary language. A common language unites people it helps the melting pot melt. In Los Angeles an immigrant never needs to learn english. They have newspapers, radio stations and television shows all in spanish. The kids often go to schools speaking little english and this slows down the whole class. I know I've talked to teachers in the Santa Ana school district they express their frustration. If we were forced to learn to speak spanish it only makes the problem worse.
There was no misunderstanding of this or the previous post.Your question was more of a rant against English speaking Americans than an honest question.
Because it restricts assimilation into a majority English speaking nation and promotes isolation of a group of people. Why do you love Spanish so much? I speak both and I am a legal native born American and not of any Hispanic background. This nation was founded by people that used English to make and write our laws. They still are doing that in English.
I don't care what you speak in your private life but in my company ,you will only speak English to my clients. That's just the way I run my business in Arizona. My clients are all English speaking and they do business in English.its simple.
get over it allready
I guess it bothers me that people from other countries come here, take all that America offers and then can't even show their appreciation by learning English! It bothers me when I have to deal with a non-English speaking person (in a business), I can't understand them, and I wonder why the business owners hired them, knowing they would be dealing with mostly English speaking customers. It bother me because this is America, not Mexico...
If you are living in AMERICA, then YOU should learn and speak English! If you don't want to speak English, then go back to what ever country you are from! I should not have to learn your language in My country, you should make the effort to lean mine!
And I agree 100% with what 'Chery, alliswell, Joey J and Karma have said! We are tired of footing the bill for all the illegals, Love America (and learn our language) or get out!
This is the USA,not mexico, our language is English. If you like spanish so much ask your questions in spanish and give all the people who prefer to converse in the official American language which is English a frigging break!
The simple answer to this is
Because we live in America.........What do Americans speak English
We are not living in
Mexico, France, Spain , Russia
It is a put down on America ; on it's way of life and it's high standards seeing things written in Spanish that are there as a courtesy for those who can't read English. If you can read English your not an American.
Not hard to understand for anyone who moves here legally.
The biggest problem we have is illegal immigration and the illegal population thinking they have the same rights to everything a legal citizen has. It is killing our economy and taking away our country's ability to provide services for those that truly need them as legal law abiding working true citizens of the United States of America.
I may have this wrong but I was listening to a radio program and I thought they said in LA county 40% of the people on well fair are illegal migrants. The first thought that entered my head was how do they get well fair if there illegal, the second thought was if we know that ..why aren't they being deported , we know who they are and where they live or we couldn't send them a check every month.
oh well I guess it's only our tax dollars at work.
peopel just wannt to jump to conclusins becasue you said the mexican word.........and whine and complain .........maybe they should go pick some oranges........mmmmmmm or wash my car.......or mow my yard.......sounding better all the time...then they wouldn't have the time or energy to whine so much and the illegals would be forced out due to lack of work ............oh_hell
Now, you've gone and done and upset the general populous. This is America, you should speak English. I'm from Texas, which is now over run with the Hispanic population, flying there Mexican flags, putting down the gringos. Yes, a war is coming. There are alot of Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, red-necks that are ready to put there foot down and put a stop to all of this. This is not Mexico, learn the language, learn the laws, get off of welfare while working under the table. The multiply like cockroaches and ride the welfare system. Right now in New Orleans there is well over 30,000 illegal immigrants, they want 15.00 to 20.00 an hour, I say call immigration and give these people there free ride home, and their free meal, so that you can pick up these same individuals again next week and do the same damn thing. People are sick of it. I'm a small blonde woman and their fat greasy wife's run shopping carts into me in the grocery store, simply because they are jealous. If you could have heard what I heard on the radio last week, you could possibly have a change of heart. They were calling Texas , Their Hispanic nation and boasting about white men deep throating corn dogs, while they ate beans. I'm simply saying, watch them they are back stabbers and will steal you blind while drawing food stamps, wic, and anything that the STUPID white man will give them.Did you know that in New Orleans, when the french people tried to speak french, the people use to switch them in public, its a fact.
I think is bother people because they don't understand the language thats all...I don't see anything wrong with that...I believe if I am in an enviroment were is just english speaking then that is what I will speak just english...I do that all the time...If I am with spnish speaking only I say it in spanish and if is one person that don't understand me I will say it to that person what is all about it...
Because your previous question indicated that we should all be supportive of public items -- telephone menus, signs, literature -- being bilingual. What you seem not to understand is that, by doing so, it is saying "it's okay for immigrants not to learn English." If Spanish-speaking immigrants have no need to learn English, the rest of us will have to learn Spanish in order to compete in the job market, since, in jobs that deal with the public (retail, secretarial, help desk/customer support, etc.) there will no longer be one generally accepted language, but two.
Well Pamela, yes I read your other question and my answer still remains the same, sorry if you are having difficulty comprehending it, if you like I can re-scribe in Spanish for you:
In some of our Public Schools Spanish is a required course, brought about by the increase of Illegal Immigration. So yes we are in some cases forced to learn to Spanish Language.
And I don't think its right that almost all consumer products are in Spanish & English, You call A business you get the Spanish or English prompt, our State & FedGovt. sends documents to us in both English & Spanish, Signs are posted all over the U.S. printed in English & Spanish.
When People immigrated here from other lands, they conformed and learn the English Language, we did not conform to them and do for them, what have been doing for the Mexican Immigrants, (regardless of their status)
I totally see the frustration that is going on here. And if I was from Mexican lineage I would be insulted not proud, After all it makes it seem like they are too stupid to learn English.
But by having all this dual labeling does prove 1 thing, THERE ARE TOO MANY DAMN ILLEGAL ALIENS IN THE U.S.!
