First off what is the country that you are coming from that has the in-transit flight? You might want to take a look. Second, some countries you DO need an in-transit C-1 visa. Go the the Department of state page to check it out.
No, you will only need a VISA if you plan to stay. You will need a passport, obviously, and an ID, but that is all. Good Luck and Enjoy your trip!

The first few people are correct. You DO NOT need a visa for a stop, so long as you remain in the airport. Countries that are US allies DO NOT NEED A VISA to enter the country and stay for up to 90 days.
