Can I travel abroad without the I-485 receipt notice?

I am planning to apply for an I-485 adjustment of status in July.
Can I apply before I go abroad and then leave some days later without waiting for the receipt notice?
When entering the U.S. after applying for the I-485 do I need to have an actual notice in my I-797? Will they ask for such a receipt?
To be able to process my I-485 application, is it sufficient that the notice says (when it finally arrives) that they received it on a date when I was still in the U.S.?

Answer:
You must be physically in the US when you file I-485, and the I-797 receipt is the only proof that you have already filed your case. So by all means, it is best (I'd say a must) to wait for your I-797 receipt before leaving. Note that USCIS has all the records of you going through the port of entry; why take the risk?

You never know when USCIS is going to issue the receipt notice. It can be days, weeks or even months. The risk is super high if you leave soon after filing. Consult a qualified immigratin attorney if you have an emergency and must leave.

But now it looks like no one is allowed to file in July anyway.

If you have a valid H1B visa stamp on your passport, they may not ask for the receipt. Note that it is the stamp that counts, not just valid H1 status. To answer your last question, yes, the notice will say on xxx date we received your application. As long as you were in the US on that date, you should be fine. But as I said earlier, you don't know when they will issue that receipt and what date USCIS will put in there.
You will have to be granted "Advance Parole" in order to travel abroad while adjusting staus.here's the problem though...if you had over-stayed your visa you may not be able to apply for advance parole...otherwise you should be fine..
Got to www.uscis.gov for details.

EDIT- Regardless, I would not leave the country while your staus is pending.
