Why do we speak English here in America if it is a language from Europe?
Answer:
Originally we were a British colony.
Learn American history.these were English (as in a part of England) colonies originally. Can you believe our neighbors' Spanish and French are European languages, too?!
What do you suggest we speak, Navaho or Cherokee? English immigrants back in the 1500-1700 are the reason we speak English here.
Because it has worked pretty well since about 1607.
Do we really sound British??
settlers from Europe brought the English language with them. No one knows why or from what country, that factoid is lost to history. ;)
Maybe its because the original colonists were English...dohhhhh!!
Europe established this country,,then its settlers took it away so to speak..
Many English-speaking people came from Europe and did pretty well in teaching English to everyone else. In other places, Spanish became popular in the same way.
We are England's red headed step child.
