What is so hard??

ok so i read this question a few questions down that basically said have sympathy for someone coming to a different country and not knowing the language. Well if I went to a different country to make my living I would learn the language. I would not want them to cater to me. SO WHY IS IT SO HARD TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE OF THE COUNTRY? if you want to be here so bad??

Answer:
I agree. I am living in a non english speaking country. I am learning their language as I do not expect them to learn mine. I am in their country and should speak their language and obey their laws. Plain and simple.
They say english is the hardest language to learn.

But for the most part people think everything should cater to them. Everyone is lazy and think that somebody owes them something. Whatever.
Eclipse...

PLEASE do not try to implement common sense into this debate...you will confuse them and in return be called a racist.

EDIT TO ADD---

And a star for you.
Wouldn't learning the second language only perpetuate the idea that the person in question is NOT as lazy and stupid as all the bad stereotypes would have you believe?

With this in mind, you'd think they'd be jumping all over the learning of the second language.
they don't want to learn, they just want the free hand outs we offer here.
I agree, if I went to another country I would expect to learn their language. Also, I would NOT go flying my countries flag in illegal immigration parades. I would fly THAT countries flag if I wanted to become a citizen there. I would not leech off their system either. I would try to fit in and become one of them. And you get a star.
I have answered this a million times. But here it goes.
I am a first generation Hispanic. My parents came from Mexico legally and knew no English.Through the years, my parents learned English, but my mother has broken English and feel embarrassed sometimes to speak in public, I tell her, its OK, not to be embarrassed.I grew up here, born here and speak perfect English. With any immigrants, the first people coming, rarely MASTER the language. But there children do learn English..Did you ever stop and think they don't always speak English because its broken and have been ridiculed by others? Its not willful..Why is it so hard for you to understand that?

Well, your right, some don't even have a basic education or speak Spanish properly..I know others don't care to learn English at all, but not all immigrants legal or illegal from Mexico, refuse to learn English. Many do, and do well because of it...I don't support bilingual education either, I think kids should just be taught English.
As long as we are catering to them by learning their language and having everything in Spanish they have no reason to learn it. They need to be FORCED to learn English.
It makes practical sense.

But I disagree with the first poster here. English is actually an easy language to learn. Very few inflections and cases. Russian is MUCH harder! But while English is easy to learn how to speak, it's harder to learn to write. Not as hard as Chinese, though!!
first of all, i agree that if you come to this country to make a better life for yourself then you should take into consideration that this countries common language is english. but to answer your question, some people do come here to work, save, send money back home and later return. Since they plan on returning to their native country one day, there is no point in learning a language that will be useless for them as soon as they master it. They choose to work and go back. although it may not always seem that way.

read the book "the new american pioneers" by Juan Hernandez. I will admit the book is very bias, but it does open your eyes to view subjects liek this from the other side.
I hear you guys! i speak French and i would be nice ofr me to go to the ATM machine and see: For French, press 3!
But no, i learning english! maybe because i want a good education and a good job in the future! And also because, i dont like to make people feel embarassed! At home, my family speaks french, but outside, i try to speak english even though i make mistake! it's hard but it's not my country so i learn the language!
Also English is the easiest language to learn! Trust me!
All you use is "You or we" as pronoums all the time!
In french, you have "je, tu, il, ils, nous, vous, elles" and verbs have to be written a different way according to the pronoum you are using!
So, ENGLISH IS NOT A HARD LANGUAGE! IT"S THE EASIEST ONE!
Learn chinese or russian or polish before complaining!

Don't worry girl! Even if i make mistakes, girls don't seem to mind, so hey, life's good!
But yeah, i know a mexican( not that i'm pointing at mexicans) who have been here for 2 decades, but the guy can't even speak! i mean, are you serious?
I think they simply are not forced to. I learned to speak Spanish fluently starting at age 20. I spent a year living in Central America. It wasn't easy. A point for you though, even in countries like that, in the big businesses, they do have people who speak English. Even in the poor countries, the big business know it's good for business if they can communicate with their clientele.

Monolingual Americans don't have to learn another language because no matter where we go, people want our money. People who speak English in those countries have much better professional opportunities. There are jobs that require that they speak English. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

Wickedlooks. I appreciate the point you're attempting to make, but in general, to become a permanent resident, you DO NOT have to speak English at all. The only case where this is required is when it's an amnesty case.
Hey, I agree. Problem here is our government has made it so easy for them they don't have to learn our language. They spend the tax payers money bringing in interpreter's...to the courts, to the school, hospitals, etc. All at our expense.
They don't have a problem learning how to get all the freebie's. Some sympathetic American takes them by the hand and leads them to all the free things they think they are in titled to. Our own people are selling us out.
They are ignorant mutants! They love to speak their jibberish when in your presence to make us mad! They are mutants and ignorant as heck!
I learned, my sister learned, my dad and mom learned. I have met people who have been here for 25 years and do not speak a word of English...Literally! Our society fascilitates this behavior by making it very easy for non-English speakers to work and surrvive with no knowledge of local language and customs. Come down to Socal, New Mexico, Arizona or Nevada, you'll see for yourself.
Why can't you read English or do you just choose not to.To become a citizen of the U S any immigrant must learn English. To get a permanent resident visa the holder must speak conversational english. What about these laws don't you understand and then gripe about Hispanics taking english classes? Most of the classes taught to teach english are done by volunteers at some type of center that is also utilized by American citizens. Why do you keep harping on the same subject night after night and get answers but ignore those answers? Are you that slow? And I'm not just refering to the asker of this question but everyone who does this same thing day to day. It's like a soap opera.I could miss a week on here and still find the same dumb questions and the same dumb answers.
Why so hard ? English has more than double the words of the next closest language , & the grammar is different than most . Who in particular are you refering ? Some have to leave home quickly ,( Somalis,Bosnians & Kurds , here, come to mind) so don't have time . Others get bad instruction . ( Seems to happen in Malaysia & Indonesia , fairly frequently, if my experiences are any indication ,. Have been greeted in a friendly manner ,online , with words that would get them hit in person. Apologetic, once explained . )
Maybe they came with a more proficient spouse , who came for a specific job, , that wouldn't wait. Medical treatment, that couldn't wait. Lots of reasons .

So what's your specific gripe ?
I have heard that our language is the hardest to learn, but that is no excuse for them not to try. There is nothing more annoying then when you go to the store and weather it be the mexicans or the chinese or what not, rattling off. It just drives me nuts. And they are not polite when you kindly ask them to move, because i DON"T speak their language, though they are in our country. I give massive paise to the ones that try. But for the ones who flat out WON'T, get out then and stay out
