Press one for english, press two to disconnect until you learn how?
Answer:
AMEN! I am an English teacher, and I hold an MA. I was told yesterday that if I do not spend nearly a thousand dollars and take courses to cater to the 3% of our student population that doesn't speak English, I can be fired after fifteen years.
I come from a family of immigrants. They learned ENGLISH, and they asked for NO SPECIAL TREATMENT.
yes I agree, you are a total idiot.
If you translate your question into Spanish, then I agree.
Why not we need a new approach pressing two has not brought any educational results it only encourages people to not learn English. When you can press 2 there is no incentive to learn English
Press 3 for C4 which solves every problem I have ever encountered. I hate automated phone systems which serve no purpose other than to support illegal immigration. Legal aliens learn English as a matter of courtesy and survival just as we would when traveling to other countries.
No.
But I'm curious -- if you go to other countries, do you always learn their language first? Or are they supposed to learn English too.
And when/if Spanish-speaking people are in the majority, either in a county, or a state, or a country -- are you going to be happy if all of the menu options are in Spanish? Or does your suggestion only apply as long as you are in the majority.
I do agree. From the looks of things around here, where more and more are printing signs in other languages so they don't have to speak English either.......I don't have the time to wait through all the "choices" nor the desire to learn all the different languages.
As such a set-up is in place primarily for illegal immigrants, who all want, of course, a "path to citizenship" and the right to pay taxes to the USA because they only want a better life for their family, your idea is very sensible. After all, to obtain the citizenship that so many illegal aliens seem to desire so much, it is necessary to be able to read, write, speak and understand English. We may as well give them some incentive.
It makes sense to learn the language of the land you choose to live in. If you live in an English speaking country then obviously you have to learn to speak English.
No, I don't agree.
Yes immigrants need to learn english, but then just because they live here doesn't mean they are not allowed to speak their native language. My family some speak italian, so what? Don't you have anything else to do besides pick on what language ppl speak, after all they aren't talking to you.
Absolutely.
You want to live here, show some respect and learn our language.
I agree.
hey, what about press 1 for english, press 11 for spanish.....get it? :)
100% agreement.
Either that or:
Press 1 for english
Press 2 for spanish
Press 3 for french
Press 4 for german
Press 5 for Polish
Press 6 for Esperanto
Press 7 for Hindi
Press 8 for Japanese
Press 9 for Chinese
That will be slightly fairer....
I just saw that Jennie said her family speak italian. I ran out of buttons above and they didn't get represented. That is what is so annoying. Why are they so d**m special that we have to buttons, translaters, bi-lingual packaging, spanish taught in school without option? P**s on that, I want my gaelic button.
Asami asked a good question about how do they hold a job without a respectable knowledge of english. The answer is they don't. Recently, I stopped to get a burger from a place in the food court at a local mall. That's all I wanted. All the guy knew was the word burger so he pressed the full meal button (again with the buttons!). I kept saying I didn't want it because I didn't want the soda (I don't like Pepsi). I said "NO SODA, NO DRINK" over and again. He just kept going and then asked for the 50 cents (said "pippy sen"). I told him no and walked away, still listening to "pippy sen!". They have to learn to communicate in OUR language!
yes, BRILLIANT!!
No. I was sitting in a wating room today when a man loudly proclaimed, "I feel like I am in a foreign country". The woman with him, I assume his wife, scolded him in Spanish which translated to "I am going to kill you if you don't shut up." He laughed and said, "Now that I understand."
lmao, yes
YES...100%.
Try going to another country to live without speaking the language and see how long that lasts.
Hell, try going to Mexico illegally and see how quickly you end up in a Mexican prison with a cellmate named Stabby.
Word!
Yes, I agree 100%. It would definitely make my blood pressure go down.
I agree. This is America, and in America for the last 100 years it was required that you speak the language of the country - English.
When I go to Spain I don't expect everyone to speak or understand English. When I go to Japan I do not expect people to speak English. etc.
This, "changing everything in America to accommodate those who have not taken the time to learn the language" movement is costly. Arizona has recently declared English as their official language so that the government will not have to print all of their literature in both English and Spanish versions. Saving the taxpayers money. ATMs needed to be changed to accomodate those who do not speak English etc. Who do you think is paying for all of this? We are with our taxes and increased bank fees and other product mark ups.
I was recently on unemployment, due to a short term layoff, and the unemployment agency had a "press one for English, two fo espanol" prompt. This boggled my mind in the theory of "how does a person in America and not able to speak the English effectively hold a job in America long enough to qualify for unemployment and how do they effectively apply for US jobs?"
I'm all for immigration if it is done legally, and if it is done with respect for the country to which the person is looking to live. If I were to decide to move to China, I would not wave an American flag in my front yard and refuse to learn the language and force the Chinses governement to dulicate everything in my language so that I could understand it. I would take the time required to learn the language and history out of pure respect for the people and for the country of China.
The Declaration of Independence of America was written in English, as was the US Constitution. There should be a respect for that.
absolutely agree. come to america, bring with you your culture, share it with us and pay taxes with the rest of the Americans, but dont expect the rest of the country to adapt to you. you come here, you speak the american language and follow the american law.
when in rome...
but hey, if it werent for the french, we'd all be speaking spanish anyway, would we?
i totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
No. I don't. No matter how hard any adult tries, it's very, very difficult to learn another language as an adult. The brain pathways that govern learning a language just don't function as well after we mature to a certain point. It's basic biology. And so, while I think those who work in customer service, for example need to be able to communicate in English clearly, and while people should be able to understand basic things in English, most adults who try to learn English as adults will never grasp it as well as someone who started to learn it as a child. I think, because biologically, we're just not equipped to learn a second language, it's not unreasonable that some adults want to handle serious issues like medicine or credit and banking in a language where there competency is higher.
I happen to speak three languages. I speak English, German and French. And even though I'm comfortable speaking all three, I still prefer to speak English when I conduct business. I do a fair amount of business with Canada, and even though its often faster to get assistance in French, I know that I'm most comfortable speaking English, and making sure I get all the information and details I need in English.
I totally agree. I worked in a call center while in school and we had that system. It often led to rants from English speaking citizens who were angry that they had to press one, and the occasional Spanish speaker who for some reason pressed one only to demand Spanish.
It enables illegal immigrants and it discourages them from learning the language. Most of my ancestors emigrated to America from Germany and Denmark and every one of them either learned English after arriving or already spoke it. I would never have the audicity to move to France and then demand that its citizens speak English to accommodate me. I'm disgusted with our government for putting up with this crap; most countries would recognize an invasion when it occurs and curb it as soon as possible.
yes but does anyone know what to do about it writ ting to our elected officials does not work it is disgraceful that our government who should be working for the American people are just making us feel helpless
I agree with you! Your title sounds just that when I call Capital One or any other place of business in today's world! Learn English or don't bother coming here unless you learn our language!
Whats wrong with <Hello>like it used 2 be???
I think that's the best idea I've heard yet. Why should I have to press "1" for English?
I agree. I am sick of all of this. They need to either learn to become Americans or go back home.
