It may be unproven, but it makes plenty of sense. In Los Angeles, there is a high degree of inverse correlation between influx of immigrants and decrease in homicides. I find that most newly arrived immigrants are quite conservative and law-abiding, and if they are undocumented, all the more reason to keep a low profile. The immigrant children also have better manners and behavior than the native-born kids. Their parents are hard-working and there is strong extended-family unity. You don't see that inner-city sense of hopelessness or desperation because they are actively doing something to improve their lives. All of these things are stabilizing influences.

They almost make it sound believable. I wouldn't expect them to stop this sort of underhanded reporting. There's no punishment for exaggerations and outright lies in the media. We who are capable of thinking for ourselves are going to have to learn to cope with feeling left out and cheated because we actually expect responsible reporting.
