To be an American, is to represent America, whose flag do you hold?

Let every man honor and love the land of his birth and the race from which he springs and keep their memory green. It is a pious and honorable duty. But let us have done with Mexican-Americans and African-Americans and so on, and all be Americans - nothing more and nothing less. If a man is going to be an American at all let him be so without any qualifying adjectives, and if he is going to be something else, let him drop the word American from his personal description.

Answer:
If you are living in the United States, you better be holding a U.S. flag and it better not be upside down either. You can honor your heritage but if you are living in the U.S., you better be waving an American flag.
Here, here!

PS after writing this..I looked up the origin of this expression.
For anyone interested, It seems I used improper spelling:

to be an american is to be protected by christians
CONGRATULATIONS

ONCE YOU COME TO THE MELTING POT AND CALL YOURSELF AMERICAN

HOLD THE FLAG HIGH, WAVE IT HIGH, AND SING THE ANTHEM WITH GUSTO AND PRIDE.
I agree, if you come here to make your home, you should assimilate. That in no way will diminish your culture.
"American" can equally be applied to someone living in Cuba or Bolivia, however. Canadians can be Americans.

We could just all call ourselves United Statesians - or better yet, Cherokee - they are a very accepting people who are quick to adopt others. What say?
american! of course! long live america!
AGREED- I'm sick of all this crap. If someone isn't going to be just an American I think they should go back to the country they represent! To answer the question I hold the U.S Flag.
i fought for that flag and when i pledge allegiance to it, i pledge allegiance to the republic for which it stands. NOT for the so called democracy.
you know all of us americans (Native Americans excluded) have come from some other place-- Africa, Europe, Japan, ect. I don't know about whether or not it's right or wrong to get rid of the extras, (European-this, African-that) but I think that it is important to always remember where our ancestors came from.
that's why America is 'The Melting Pot' of the world.
I also agree that some good old fashioned patriotism is called for nowadays. we see so little of that, and so much complacency. It's good to find someone who is so passionate about the USA. ;)
hmmm
well i kinda have to agree and disagree at the same time
i think it's OK for a first generation to say they are African/Mexican- American or whatever
i mean if you weren't born here and raised in another country then yeah that's all good i know a Swedish family that has both flags out front and that's OK

and yeah Canadians and Mexicans and even ppl who live in south America are American
so really we say we are Americans from the us
"One of the great attractions of patriotism -- it fulfills our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what's more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous." Aldous Huxley

"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good." Samuel Johnson
I fly the American Flag and the Texas Flag, I love this
Country. Call me Racist, if you must, but at least do it in English,
and don't even think about waving another Flag higher, then
Old Glory.
I hold an American flag and also have a Blue Star flag on my house. So yes I and my family love our country.Anyone who comes into America to live and work MUST at least appreciate America. It hasn't been forced on them to live here.It was choice.I don't even like to hear Americans bashing our country. If you don't like it leave it.I don't like titles such as you describe. To me they just point out a skin difference.First and foremost as you said should be American. You can be proud of your culture and even have the flag of your native land but it should ALWAYS be flown UNDER the flag of America if that is where you're at.Proud American
What part of the word illegal do you not understand, Paco?
OUR flag -The stars and stripes!
I agree. If you weren't physically born in another country, then you need to just say you are an American. It's already known as the melting pot, so there is no need to go down to the eighth of what you represent.

I am Creole but I am forever an American!!
To everybody who lives in th continent America, North, South, or Central...HOLD YOUR FLAG UP HIGH and SING FOR YOUR COUNTRY!!!

Also hold your faith even HIGHER for we are all from GOD.
