Marry in U.S or Mexico?
Answer:
Definitely Mexico - hasta la vista!
Mmm USA definitely ... I think you'll be much more protected in case of divorce in there... think about it.
If he has permission to be in US I'll recommend that you marry him in US, But if he doesn't have permission a visa o student visa then It will be better to do it in Mexico because if he marry you in US without been legal, he won't be able to get his residence or live in US for 10 years.
Why not both? Have your large wedding & reception in one (I say Mexico, fun, tropical, and instant honeymoon local!) then later, a small civil ceremony in the U.S. Or vise-versa. Good luck and congratulations!
Edit: actually, you can just get married in Mexico and its already legally valid in the U.S. so, I say Mexico! How fun!
Heres some more info and link to full article from the U.S. Consulate:
If an American Citizen plans to marry in Mexico, he/she must follow all the applicable rules and laws of Mexico. A marriage will be recognized in the United States as long as it is legal and valid in Mexico. Only marriages performed by Civil Registry Officials (not religious officials) are considered legal and valid in Mexico.
Just make sure he loves you for you, and not a green card,,,,,happens all the time, too many times actually,,,,
2 1/2 years ago, I married a Mexican lady.( I am an American/ gringo, 69 years old, 14th generation German/French/Cashatta(America... Indian,) and we married inside the USA, even tho, she did not have the papers to cross. There is a place, and a way! ( At the Old Bridge, between the Rio Grande River and the USCIS station/ building, at EAGLE PASS, TEXAS is a large parking lot. It is in the USA, however it is on the Mexico side of the building.)We were married there by the local Justice of Peace, as has been litterly thousands, over the years!!)
Surely you know by now, that to marry (officially- ceramonially ) in Mexico, you must have the blessings of : The State's Govenor, The city/ town Mayor, The Chief of Police(EL JEFE), The Catholic Priest, (wheather or not you and/or he is Catholic), The local Juez( JUDGE), The Federal Mexican Immigration, and, if you are going to do the customary honorable thing as to the "Platicas", all of that has to be witnessed, and attested to be nutral parties ! We figured that all of this scatology was going to 1. Take over up to 8 months, 2. Cost over $2500.00 USD ! This is in the desert mountains of north central Mexico, the town is over 200 years old, and I am/ was the only gringo in town. Perhaps in the tourist traps, with a lot of American's, you may find the situation's are different. AAAHHHHH!! "" En muy muchos lados, Mexico si viva en la antes, y si hoy, continuar a honor metodos viejos"" " TAL ES VIDA, VIDA ES TAL" !! GOOOD LUCCKK !!
Uncle Wil
My husband is from Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico and he had a permanent resident alien card. We got married in Mexico and it was wonderful (and a whole lot cheaper!). My wedding dress - fitted and hemmed in one day total cost was $170 american, shoes were $10 corona and veil /garter $10. His tux and extras with shoes ran $80. We had god-parents for everything! The rings, the food, the music, the serving peices, the cake, the decorations, and the tables and chairs were paid by them. My mother in law bought these elaborate wedding invitaitions down there. His family is only 20 minutes from the beach and several luxurious hotels and we stayed in one for 2 days for the honeymoon. We had over 500 guests served and it was outdoors at his mothers home. You will love it.
Your marriage will be recognized in the US. I had my name changed with just the proof of the License (which was in Spanish and had to have an American notary to validate it to take to Social Security office for new card) then everything else that needed changing. Check out the new fees for the Permanent resident cards and forms. They have just been increased and some of them are double. As soon as you do get married wait 6 months to a year if you can before applying. The reason is that they want to make sure this was not a marriage to get residency. Also, if he has any major violations or tickets he may not be approved. He also can not have extreme debt such multiple skipped rent, maxed credit cards with no know payments, or repossesions. If he does he needs to take care of these immediately. I have been married ten years this past December and my husband is just now applying for citizenship. He had to have his prc for at least 8 yrs before applying. When I met him he had only had it for 4 yrs. He should have is approval papers by the end of the year and then can take the test. Then we will have the BIG party.LOL
Congrats on your engagement and if you have anymore questions just email me. Good luck and God bless you both.
And by the way, Uncle Will is right about the things you may need to get married in Mexico but not all of Mexico. You do not need Mexicos immigration permission. If you visit under the limit of 180 days there is no need especially if you drive over the border instead of fly. If you are catolica or he is then to get married by a Catholic preist you will have to have the Placticas. In English or in Spanish - all Catholics go by this before marriage or they will not approve the marriage. The license apps are about the same there as here. Just go to the local government office show your plactica papers and your birthcertificates and they will help you sign the forms. It is not a big headache just meticulous as any other wedding but cheaper.
