Have you ever encounterd unfriendliness and/or hostility in the places you've traveled?
Answer:
i have traveled a lot in Mexico.... no problems everybody was very nice ....i traveled the desert states .
nope. i've been all over the world and never had any problems, but i tend to be a very agreeable person. plus, i'm fluent in french, which helped me shake the 'dumb american' stereotype while in europe..
Only when I travelled to places were French people were
Being that Americans are seen as arrogant, and even I have experienced American tourists being rude and walking around like they own the place ~ I've definitely been predisposed to people disliking me in other counties. People have never been hostile, but as soon as I speak I get a lot of, "Oh, you're American...", followed by a sneer.
I'm going to Europe in a few weeks (my first time since the Iraq war & Bush becoming our Pres.), so we'll se how that goes...
Yes. When I went to Israel in 2000. The airport officials harassed me for over an hour. In addition, I had to take out my belongings and show them to 4 different officials, and after an hour an a half they finally let me go.
I also witnessed some being openly racist against Arabs. I also encountered some nice Jewish people in Israel as well, so I can't say that ALL of them are a certain way.
Yes. Lately. In my own local grocery store that has been taken over by illegal criminal aliens. Pitiful.
I have traveled all over the world and I have to say that I always have a hard time in Germany. I even had to call a women a Nazi 27 years ago. I was so mad at the way they treated my baby son. I have been there 3 times and will never go there again. It is sad because my grandfather was from there. Italy is cool as is Romania and Slovika love Hungary and off to the Ukraine soon for a visit.France is pretty and I love Paris, yes they are a bit snooty but that is Paris.
no,when I travel overseas,i tend to make friends where ever i go.Most people i have been in contact with are the same;they worry about their family and are trying to make a better life.I never think that the American way is perfect or that another country is "3rd world" we just come from different cultures with different opportunities.Enjoy your trip if you are planning one.
Northern Ireland during 'The Troubles' 70s plus!! By courtesy of the 1st Battallion Belfast Brigade,( IRA). Try battery acid for breakfast! Women trying to batter you to death with ordinary household items. Provocitive women leading you into the sights of an Armalite rifel. Petrol and jell bombs are famouse for warming your **** in winter weather! I haven't a clue why Irish people fall out with each other, even to this day, because they're so beautiful it beggars belief that they could harm anyone at all. I still think about it because it was a bloody madhouse and, let's face it, the whole world is a bloody madhouse these days.
No, it serves no purpose to bear grudges against each other but sometimes things can spiral out of your control and, before you know it, brother could be fighting brother and father fighting son. The situation in the world today is really dire and it seems that, once again, there is no escaping what seems like the inevitable. More threats have been made by Islamic extremists and they say that we are going to pay dearly for insulting their prophet Muhammad and I personally do not understand how grown men could be so fuccing stupid and shallow minded.
Nobody likes the Jehova's Witnesses banging on their door but these characters would shoot you dead given the slightest smidgen of a chance. Bombs? As Al Jhonson would say, "You aint seen nothin' yet." This is sound multiculturism as it is so don't whinge when the screaming starts because, after all, you like to have them here on your doorstep.
I was a travel professional for 32 years. For 9 of those years, I was a Tour Director and escorted hundred of people all over the world. I was NEVER treated with anything except respect. I have always found people to be just people - everywhere. They want to talk about where you are from, what your life is like, what do you do for a living.ordinary things that people everywhere talk about.
They have always been helpful and willing to help you find your way if your lost, help you interpret a map, recommend a good hotel or restaurant.
Never any hostility.ever!
Since retiring, I travel still - mostly alone (by choice) and have never felt threatened.
The only time I ever felt uncomfortable was in a major American city where I got lost driving and ended up in a really, really bad neighborhood - at dusk. I ran all the red lights! HA!! - and got outta there fast.
Yes,for instance when I travel to the grocery or anywhere else I need to go here in Az. I experience rudeness, sexual harrassment and blatant racism from mexicans due to my white skin. This happens quite often to most whites here.
Arizona is the most rude, disgusting, filthy, racist, prejudice, and worthless state to travel or live in. And Mickey's statement above, proves the reason why. People here are extremely prejudiced against Brown skin and are quick to call anyone resembling a Mexican a "moist back" or illegal. I deal with this on a daily basis, plus this state is horribly hot, 123 degrees, come on!
If you visit the US do not come to AZ, the Grand Canyon is not all that either.
Most white people in Arizona have no clue that they are racist, because that is the way it has always been here. They joke at the dinner table about them ******* or beaners but would never have the guts to say it out loud in public. Even the KKK must camp outside of town to rally - but the white comes off when they come back home.
When you travel you will occasionally meet the same jerks you are familiar with around your hometown :) Be wary of street thieves ... just like back home they believe tourists carry more money.
I have been to Cebu Province Philippines each of the last 2 years for a month at a time. In the city they do not pay too much attention to Kanos (non-Asian foreigner), in the Province you will find people may stare simply because you look different. They're not being rude, just curious.
Be courteous and you will find that the people are very friendly. Learning a few words of the local language will earn you major Pogi Points in any country :) This was also my experience in Europe when I lived there 30yrs ago.
In my experience the most despised tourist worldwide is the American who requires everyone else to speak English so the American can understand them :P To beat this stereotype learn to greet, thank & ask simple questions in either the local language or another non-English language that is used there :D
One bit that might seem obvious, but trips many Yanks. Other English speaking countries may understand American, but they do not speak the English you use at home ... it IS a foreign language after you leave US :)
God Bless

everyday when I ride the train in new york, predominantly at the 6 train????
Yes, this Texas boy went up to Oklahoma a few years back just prior to the annual Texas-Oklahoma football game. I righteously proceeded to tell them how we were gonna kick their butts just like most of the years before. I said things like, "Texas doesn't slip off into the Gulf of Mexico because Oklahoma sucks!" - stuff like that. I was really in their face the whole time. I don't understand it, but they were not only rude to me, they were downright mean. They even told me to never come back to Oklahoma! Jeez! What's up with Okies these days?!!
Actually when I was 17 (in 1972) I was traveling to Florida from Seattle, in a Volkswagen van with 3 of my older sisters friends, 2 of which were very close and known for many years.I had another older sister living in Ft. Lauderdale, that was our destination. Anyway we traveled along the coast and went thru a small part of Tennessee, I had to go the the bathroom so we turned into a gas station, it was kinda off a main highway, little place. I asked were the bathroom was and the attendant said "it is for customers only" (back then the doors were always left open, usually, never heard of that before that time) I thought the guy was kidding and when I headed toward the bathroom door ( I could see where it was) the guy grabbed my arm and said he wasn't kidding it was for customers only, and then let go of me, he didn't hurt me or anything, we ended up buying a qt. of oil so I could go. We thought it was a hick town and they didn't like the looks of us (hippy types) in their town. The rest of the drive was wonderful.
