It bothers me because "PC America" feels the need to translate just about everything to please them. There's this girl that was in my 2nd grade class and by the time she graduated she still couldn't speak any English!! (She was Mexican.) There was also a Russian immigrant in my class and she knew no English her first day, by the end of the school year she was fluent. Hmmm. I wonder why she learned English faster and the other girl never learned it. Maybe it's because the Russian girl had to learn English and she did!
I don't care what they speak. However, if they want me to buy stuff from them they had better learn English.

I think it is fine...but it should not become a nationally accepted language in the US, to accomodate people who live in the country that won't learn english.
Doesn't matter who thinks this very good question is racist. My answer is considered racist---and guess what?? I do NOT care.
Mexicans who cannot speak clear, easy to understand and fluent English--have NO business being here, illegally or otherwise.
Draft Mexicans for US military service in Iraq War for it's duration or six years: they live through that, then they have my full blessing to become legal US citizens.
Let them speak whatever language they choose. However in a public serice position and talking to those who speak English...they should speak it. What they do on their own time is their business.
If you intend to prosper learn the language. If you don't want to prosper then by all means continue to speak spanish.
I do not care if they speak Spanish if they choose that to be their form of communication with other Spanish speakers, but if you are going to come to the USA you need to make an effort to learn English in order to survive. The best way to do that is to get a job where you will be speaking with ordinary Americans. Also the good thing is we have many signs in both Spanish and English and if done properly people can use this as a tool to help learn English.

Hard Rocker there are many Americans who can not speak coherent easy to understand and Clear English.
For at least the past 30 years in the major Texas cities the signs are in bot languages. Also you have a hard time getting a job without knowing both languages.
I wonder why it has taken so long for the people to realize what was happening.We tried to tell them but they looked the other way. Now it has come to you.I hope you have better luck than we have for the past 30 years.
America is a "free country" [whatever the hel* that means anymore] so they can speak whatever they want; however, I don't believe that we should have to accommodate them if they won't or can't learn English.
No racism here either. I was in Vietnam and had to learn some ch*nk sh*t in order to get laid. It's just common manners.
If you don't want to hear people speaking a language that is not English, Go back to England!
I am American with a Mexican ancestry and proud to be. I am proud to be an American. One reason is that Americans are always looking to improve on everything. Better homes, cars, streets, electronics, space technology, etcetera. Anyways English is part of our American culture and should be. If you want to truly be a part of the American culture, you should speak the language. I would say it is okay for someone to know the language of their heritage, but as an American, English rules.
I think if people are so concerned as to what they are saying they should learn the language. I do not speak Spanish so you all know. I think the people that do all the complaining about this language thing have nothing better to do.
I think it's great. Most countries have multiple languages as their official language. The more, the better.

If they want to live in American they should, indeed must, speak English and I would support English as the national language laws.
1. It shows disrespect of America to come here and not learn the language and think we should put things in Spanish for you.
2. Many Americans are not predjudice against Hispanics that speak English but are against those who do not.
3. Why do they want to speak Spanish anyway when it was not their original language? The natives of Mexico spoke Mayan and Aztec and other native tongues before they were conquered by the Spanish so I do not understand why they want the language of their conquerors and want to come here and work here and not give the language of a country they want to live and work in the same respect.
4. They cannot get better jobs and rise in the economic scale until they learn English. The only sort of jobs they can get speaking Spanish only are like as gardeners, construction, hotel service and maids. I am sure they want higher paying jobs than those for themselves or for their children.
5. We cannot properly educate their children in Spanish in many schools if they speak Spanish and their teachers English.
The kids want to speak English and learn quickly.
I live in AZ and I have been learning some words in Spanish I did not know and can understand a lot just by hearing and seeing so much of it. I already know French.
I think Mexicans who don't speak English Will continue to work in fields and minimum wage jobs and the ones who talk Spanish no problem it's a free country.....if you are here legally.
Your post has me more concerned about Americans who cannot write intelligibly in English.
Whenever a person goes to another country, it is expected to know something of their language, or at least attempt to try to communicate with them in their "native" tongue, not your own.
With this being stated, I think that anyone that comes into this country to live should learn our language (English). I don't think we should have to cater to those that don't know our language, but must complete government forms, communicate with government employees, and must purchase food and other things from stores in town. They should at least make the effort to learn our language.
Personally, I don't care if they speak pig latin to their friends and relatives, but when communicating with another person they don't know, and can't communicate with them in their own language, they should be speaking to them in English while in America. I also think a lot of money would be saved if all government forms were printed in English only. I think that would motivate people to learn the language. I mean, when I went to Mexico, I took classes to learn their language - enough to get me by during the trip. It is only fair to expect that when in your own country that everyone is going to at least try to talk to you in the language that is spoken in your country.
This is America ,and I am an American and I think we should not have to deal with any other language other than English. If a person does not know the English language either study it and learn it or hit the road back to where you came from and take your foreign language with you.
I believe that if you are going to live in a predominantly English-speaking country, then you should have the courtesy to learn the language.
I don't care if they speak gibberish at home. What I don't like is having to pay taxes for Immigrants (notice I didn't say Mexicans) to have interpreters in court, to have to pay state and government employees extra money to speak their language. If they want to participate in this country, they have to learn the language before they're even allowed in. Why should it cost the tax payers to accommodate all the Spanish or any other language speaking immigrants?
I've spent most of my adult life traveling the world. I know what it's like to be in another country and not speak the language. I've always considered it rude to not try and do them the courtesy of attempting to learn their language -- even if I slaughtered it (and I usually did), at least I put forth the effort. There are times, when traveling, when you meet a firend and begin to talk -- in English. It's rude not to then interpret for those around us. But then, some things shouldn't be shared.
I think people have the right to speak whatever language they know in the US, whether it's English or not. HOWEVER, I don't think that not speaking English should be a burden to the US - financially. I work in a physician's office, and we have to pay translators to translate for our Spanish-speaking patients. This is a federal law. It drives me nuts. Having said this, I think that immigrants are a vital part of our economy. It would be nice to see organizations devoted to assist immigrants make a concentrated effort to provide language classes. I don't think it should be a burden to the state or government for translating services to those who choose to live here, in a predominantly English-speaking country. My husband's family came from Portugal, and they learned to be proficient in English. I don't think that's too much to ask.
I live in Texas, but have lived all over the West. It's not just Mexicans, but I think you know that. I hate that other countries in the world have national languages, but when America talks about English as an official language, human rights activists start screaming how racist we're being. So now, politicians and regular folks like us are afraid to say anything because being called racist has no retort without "being more racist."
I really feel like this is an important question. What gets me is that when people LEGALLY come into the country, they can take the "admittance" test in their native tongue. What's up with that? If you or I go to France, we had better know how to say a couple of things. If we go to Russia, we had better know how to carry on a short conversation. If you or I go into the heart of Mexico, we'd be lost and robbed if we didn't speak perfect Spanish. Why can't I communicate in my own country with CITIZENS who cannot speak America's language?
Long story short: something needs to be done. IF, by chance, a law does finally pass, it needs to be enforced. If not, Spanish may soon be the official language of an English colony...
Just made me think, I saw a old John Wayne movie last night on TMC Europe. Missed the title,three men,Mr. Wayne,a young man and a Mexican.They were godfathers to a orphaned baby,John Wayne wouldn't allow the Mexican to speak Spanish in front of the baby.No Mexicano he said,you'll scare the baby cause his mom was a American.They were in Arizona. I know what does that have to do with anything..
