Two decades ago, President Reagan made a big dramatic play of telling Gorbachev to "tear down" the Berlin Wall, and when the wall did in fact come down, it was called a victory for democracy. Now conservatives want to turn it around and build a wall right here at home. Good grief, does no one see the hypocrisy?
Money is a more concrete downside. Costs to build and patrol such a wall would be huge. And as so many have noted, emigrants will always find a way.
i do not know why some folks are against the fence. i DO know that there would be NO downside to it.

I wonder how effective it would actually be. After all, when the Berlin Wall was built, there were still people who risked life and limb to make it to the West.
They'd actually have to go through with the bill they signed into law as a trick just before the election, and that would be bad precedent.

98% of illegal immigrants in the US came here legally. They just got visitor visas and didn't go back home. Thus, building a wall for several billion (I believe it is in the billions) dollars is simply a waste of money. Plus, some economic experts would even argue that illegal immigrants stimulate the economy as opposed to harm it.

Not so much a fence in terms of wire, the plan is to use high technology, developed by the Boeing corporation to monitor the border and watch border crossings with enough detail that a relatively small border force can respond to the exact positions of the incursion. Still, there are "community activist" saying that this is big brother and will be used to monitor that action of honest citizen in border towns. Who could possibly care what those people do in their daily lives in the first place and for another who are the community activitsts who oppose border measures? I think high tech monitoring will be in place on the northern borders and coasts as well.
And I disagree with people (who are often Hispanics) who claim that illegals stimulate the economy. I live in the Middle of the US and in the last six months we have seen illegals working as bricklayers being paid half of what local bricklayers would get, so they are putting people out of work. There seems to be a misconception that illegals only work as gardeners. No they take many construction jobs as well as taking traditional jobs for students and the working poor. Its not a hold harmless issue either.
they are scared of change. by building the fence we can cut down on illegals coming in, especially the ones who bring drugs in. i know i don't want my kids getting hold of drugs and screwing their chances up on a future. i have seen to many people destroy their life because of drugs.
I don't oppse the wall, however, even though the border might deter immigration but it won't stop illegals from finding a way to get through it - the possible downside is obvious - we'll build the wall and our laws will still remain unenforced.

is that you free trade (slave trade) conservatives don't even get your hypocrisy in opening the world up to free trade/slave trade.while also advocating fencing our border.

The wall in Berlin was built to keep people in,caged in their own country by a foreighn country,just like a prison
the wall on the US border is to keep people from a foreign country out,preventing from entering a country that's not theirs,mexico does not let foreigners into their country illegaly either
So Many? I don't think the AMERICAN people are against it. The politicians are afraid of offending Mexico, and the rest of the central American countries. The know Mexico has OIL and they're afraid that they will open the door to CHINA if we don't kiss their @#$% ! I say build the fence and put MACHINE GUN towers every so often and shoot when they cross. Or we could all move to Mexico. It won't be long until they will be over here anyway. None whatsover! Its a deterrent! I immigrated from the Philippines, swore allegiance to the flag of the United States. Joined and discharge Honorably from the US Air Force; while others march and demand and fly the Mexican flag and insists on speaking/singing in Spanish even triend to convert US national anthem into spanish. A path to immigrancy & citizenship is to swear allegiance to the country that would take you and fly American Flag proudly!!!
