Does Puerto Rico want to become a state?
Answer:
No. If they became a state they'd have to start paying income tax, which they are exempt from. As a commonwealth they have the best of all possible worlds, tax exemption, US citizenship, and a lot of Welfare.
Who cares?
lets cut them loose
Puerto Rico has that choice. They can become a state if they choose to, but I believe there are benefits to them remaining a commonwealth which they are not ready to give up. It seems that the only real benefit they would gain would be the vote.
There are lots of people in Puerto Rico, and they don't all agree about anything. There have occasionally been referendums there to pursue independence or statehood. None have passed. It seems the majority of the people there are happy with the way things are.
They want to find a way to get their Independence and still keep the money coming in from the great Satan
why would they want to be a state, they have it nice right now. The USA wants them to become a state to start taxing them.
There are several political factions in Puerto Rico, and one large minority faction is in favor of statehood.
However, the last few times it has come up for a vote, the people of Puerto Rico have voted to remain a commonwealth.
They don't get a lot of the basic things that states get like funding. They only get federal funding whereas states get state, federal, and city funding. They don't even get to vote for President, but yet they can be drafted. They are getting close their last vote was close.
But as far as I know, they would prefer remain independent.
idk
He's full of it! The Ricans like it just the way it is!!
The country is divided 50 50. It's hard for them to choose between loosing their national sovereignty or their cash cow, (the USA)
I heard that they had an election and the people voted AGAINST becoming a state. They wanted to remain a territory.
I know that the People of Puerto Rico have voted down proposals for statehood. I think the last one was some time ago, so sentiment might have changed. Conversely, they've also voted down independence.
I work remotely with some Puerto Ricans. The coporation we work for has a large, expensive facility there because of the tax advantages afforded by it's status.
Boriquas are split on this issue on becoming a state 50/50.
Oh and Gene Simmons was part of KISS.
Mary Shelly is considered to be one of the more radical female authors of her time. She was the daughter for progressive parents for that time period. She was considered progressive because many women at that time were not allowed to be educated, own property etc etc.
puerto rico is a punk they let themselfs get taken away by another country.
No they always shoot it down. They have however, asked to become independant of the US and govern themselves.
I read that in the news a few days ago.
Puerto Rico has always rejected US statehood. They do not want to lose their national identity, culture and language, they are happy with being a self governing country with a free association with the US as a commonwealth
