Steps of immigration??

Class assignment!! We're studying New York and i need to know how the immigrants got through ellis island - Not anytime recently.. you know, back in the old days.. i dont really know though.. 1880's?? i'm kinda clueless! i'm doin a google search myself but if you dont mind if you know a good website or sumthin please let me know!! In the olden days, Europeans came to America without any passports. They just register and became American citizens.
