Russian visa question?

My husband is an american citizen. He is going to Russia with me to visit. I am debating on whether we should get a tourist or a so called homestay visa. It seems to be less trouble to get a tourist visa support which is provided by a ton of agencies online. But since he is going to be staying with my family, we wont need a hotel. Has anybody had experience with that? I dont want any problems once we are there.

Answer:
It is quicker to obtain a tourist visa to Russia, but you will need a hotel reservation, whether you use it or not. You are better off with the homestay visa, as your husband can request a double-entry visa and use it next time you go as well, and it may be issued longer than the 1 month period a tourist visa is issued for.

The only difficulty for you is obtaining the registered invitation letter froM OVIR. As it is your husband, and if you are still a Russian citizen, you might be able to bypass your relatives waiting in the line at OVIR if you call the Russian Consulate directly, and ask their advice on the sitauation (which I recommend doing regardless).

Here's the website of the Russian Consulate in Washington DC: http://www.russianembassy.org/consulat/h...

Call them, and explain it is your husband and you are going to visit YOUR relatives. The websites only provide information for the general cases.
