Do us citizens have to apply for a ssn?

im just wondering, because i am a us citizen, and I always remembered having a ssn.i wonder where it came from, or was it "granted" to me at birth because i am a us citizen

Answer:
Yes you need to apply to get a card - at birth your parents once they received your Certified Birth certificate had to go and apply to get you a card and number -

the link below will help to answer your questions
you need to apply for it, but, being an american citizen applying is merely a formality
I had to apply for my sons before they could be tax deductions as you need ss # to claim children
Parents fill out papers when you are born for ssn.
the doctors give it to you at birth
your parents are given the forms to fill out for your birth record and SS while they are still in hospital, they are mailed from there and parents receive in 4-6 weeks!
