I agree with you/ Roosevelt for the most part. However, while people living here should be American FIRST, I think you must remember that there are limits and extensions. For example, there is nothing wrong with expressing pride in your origins. You can't take that away from people. Although I agree that sometimes pride goes so far that it isolates ethnic subsets from the rest of the populace.
The idea that we should all speak English and English alone is an outdated concept. We live in a rapidly globalizing world. What citizens of other continents have faced forever, the fact that they may need to know the language of people who don't speak theirs, is something that is finally coming to our shores. Being as we are such a large country, we have been sheltered from this until now. While I agree that english has been the unnofficial language of the US, their is nothing wrong with expanding the horizons of our citizens by having more people become multilingual.
And keep in mind, no one is going to force anyone to pick up a spanish dictionary. Those who want to participate will do so, and those that don't won't, and each group will reap the rewards and consequences of their choice.
I agree, and I also think they will never become real Americans, they can not give up that country they love so much, and they have proved their allegiance to Mexico, they fly their flags here. They have no right to protest here in US, they are not legal American citizens. If they intended on being all the above, they would have come here legally in the first place, and I guarantee you that even if the Amnesty bill is past, there is no way these people will come forward and follow the correct process, as they have gotten away with it to long and will continue to not change what they want to do or how they do it. I still think it is cheaper to deport them, than to shell out money for all the expenses it will take to legalize 12 to 20 million people. Yes, I will pass it on.

Well the thing is, that almost no American now is a real american either... Or did you forget that even your parents or grandparents came from another country? America is a land of immigrants! That makes it such an interesting country, all the cultures come together, just imagine how boring it would be, if everybody as soon as they come to America would forget everything about the country they came from! That would be horrible!
