Does anyone know what the immigration laws are on my mum (in Australia) coming to UK?

I have become a British citizen by Ancestory (but not from her side). I have another sister in Oz, but mum wants to live here with me. Is this possible? Could she eventually become a citizen here too?

Answer:
Off the top of my head I think your only chance is an Independant Means visa. Find info halfway down this page:

Any thoughts Jim?
Why not - we let every other bugger in don't we - NO DISRESPECT TO YOU OR YOUR MUM - I generalise
I believe so yes. About time we have a proper Brit returning. No chance of brining any more is there.

I will warn you- Mum and grandparents will have quite a shock. The country is nothing now like it once was- it's a mess and over-run by grubby 3rd-world foreigners now.

Don't live in inner city London- it's as bad as any US ghetto.
Are your mum and dad married? If so they should fall under this scheme.

Can my spouse obtain a British passport or citizenship through marriage?
British citizenship cannot be acquired through marriage alone. Your spouse would have to live in the UK for a continuous period of three years and apply for naturalisation through the Home Office while still resident there. Once the naturalisation certificate is obtained they can then apply for a passport.

I would say the above is the easiest way if she meets the qualifications. If not she may have to live there for about 5 years to gain citizenship. I don't think having a British daughter would help that much it's usually the other way around.
Cheers Frisky, but I don't really know.

If your Mum was over 65 and financially dependent on you she could apply: http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/applyin...

Being self-supporting, the relevant regulations say that she must be over 60, and she must have a disposable income of over £25,000, and the means to accommodate herself.

There appears to be no provision for someone to be partially self-supporting, but also receiving assistance from family members settled in the UK; in fact this is specifically excluded in the section Frisky mentions:

"Retired persons of independent means
Requirements for leave to enter the United Kingdom as a retired person of independent means
263. The requirements to be met by a person seeking leave to enter the United Kingdom as a retired person of independent means are that he:

(i) is at least 60 years old; and

(ii) has under his control and disposable in the United Kingdom an income of his own of not less than £25,000 per annum; and

(iii) is able and willing to maintain and accommodate himself and any dependants indefinitely in the United Kingdom from his own resources with no assistance from any other person and without taking employment or having recourse to public funds; and

(iv) can demonstrate a close connection with the United Kingdom; and

(v) intends to make the United Kingdom his main home; and

(vi) holds a valid United Kingdom entry clearance for entry in this capacity"

On the other hand, there is always discretion which may be exercised by the Home Secretary "outside the rules".

I'm afraid I can't go beyond this. I would recommend getting professional advice from a solicitor or similar.

Good luck.
