Who should learn?
Answer:
English should be a requirement of citizenship. In almost every country in the world, you find people speaking English. Not to sound conceited, but it is the language of the educated.
One of the dangers of having more than one popular language, where some people might not know the other is that people can be fed misinformation and live in their own islands of ideas. Basically, politics could cater to them and tell them one message, and tell everyone else another.
Then there's the issue of communication. What if a police officer couldn't understand someone's language when making an arrest, or assisting a victim?
Oh yes, perhaps not fluent but they should know english.
I think ANY immigrant, not just Mexicans should have to know the USA's official language which is Spanglish
All Legal immigrants should have an understanding of the American language (English)
I think all immigrants should have atleast the basic English so that they can communicate and understand
Having an understanding of English happens to be one of the REQUIREMENTS of becoming an American Citizen!!!!
Deport all illegal aliens!!!
they should at least know how to say "paper or plastic" or "what would you like to drink" before deciding to come here and work. at least know how to speak simple conversational dialogue. they dont have to be fluent but at the same time, they should not expect for americans to help them fill out job applications, get them public assistance, and spend extra dollars on hiring translators to fit their language barriers. the US has made it so easy for hispanics that there really isnt a need for them to know English. there is an option for spanish on every telephone prompt, spanish translation on my baby's huggies box and formula, spanish translators at almost every company physically and through phone contact. we should not have to adapt to spanish, they should adapt to english.
Yes, If you are going to be an American Citizen you should speak English very well.
I believe that sharing a common language would help in unifying us, help in assimilating immigrants and, well, it would be nice to share something in common, don't you think? There's nothing wrong with being bilingual, in fact its great, but a knowledge of basic English would truly help unify our country, I think.
Yes, that is the least you can do if you pretend to be part of another country, it shows respect and real interest.
Not required because it's not necessary. There's several large communities that exist in America where no English is spoken. The only people who have a problem with it are the eavesdroppers who only speak one language- and aren't smart enough to learn another.
they should be fluent before they even start the paperwork
Not fluent but at least getting by with little understanding and little speaking. I have seen and met a lot who have been in the US longer than 20 plus years and still not talk or understand English.
To my knowledge the test is written and administered in English. The oath is spoken in English. So of course they would have to be able to read, wirte and speak English to become a citizen. They do not however have to have those things to get a green card. Visa interviews are administered in the immigrants national language. So which are you refering to, the citizenship or green card requriements?
Most third world illegals come to the U.S. for personal economic reasons. Most do not come to cherish our democratic system. Many so called "immigration rights" groups "fan the fire" with their rhetoric which encourages immigrants to preserve their culture and language at tax payers expense. Among some of these groups, the word "assimilation" is considered xenophobic. When ultimately illegal immigrants and/or their children do become voting citizens, many vote in blocks (Mexican-American, El Salvadoran-American, Guatemalan-American, etc.), not for the good of America, but for personal economic gain usually at the expense of another group.
If you visit another country, out of common courtesy you should know a few phrases - "please" "thank you" "excuse me" as well as how to order in a restaurant. It's just good manners because you are a guest in their country.
I believe the same is true in the United States. If you are visiting, you should know a few phrases in English.
However, if you are planning on immigrating to another country, you should speak the language of the country fairly close to fluently.
I would say that immigrants who are coming to America should be required to learn English for their own benefit as well as out of common courtesy.
All immigrants should have basic knowledge of the English language, especially the Mexican immigrants because our country has adapted to them enough, almost every consumer product has the Spanish language on it, when you call a business you get the Spanish or English prompt, documents that are issued by out state & federal agency are in both English & Spanish, and even our schools offer bilingual classes in Spanish. All this needs to stop I feel like I live in Mexico. When I go to Mexico everything isn't provided to me in English, Its in Spanish the language of their country. So if they want to live here they need to learn English, so we can take all those bilingual signs down, remove their language of our consumer products, have our govt issue documents in 1language, and in our schools teach Spanish as an elective, not as a way of life. These Illegals have to come to the realization that this country owes them nothing, and it a priviledge for them to be here, it is not their right. They need to conform to our laws, we shouldn't have to make special laws for them.
What other immigrants who came to this country from other lands, had signs in their native language posted all over our country, I can't think of one.
Mabey not fluent, but yes they should know enough to get them by.
