I think all US Citizens should learn Spanish or French or Italian or German... it doesn't matter which language, as long as they come out of that eggshell and learn that learning foreing languages makes one culturally richer!
And by the way, Mexicans, Brazilians, Argentinians, etc, are -by definition- also Americans. America is a continent, not a country.

No, our national language is English. I don't know about any of you, but I was offended when they tried to come out the with Spanish version of the National Anthem. This is america. Not Meximerica. i work for hotels so i see all there LEGAL IMIGRANTS that come to the u.s for trips either for work or vacations! its just great when they can speak to you fluently and you can speak back to them!

no but i do think that everyone should know at least two languages just for their own personal growth. times change and you have to change with them. If you don't wish to learn a language that's your perogative but don't whine about it later on when you find out someone gets paid more than you because they do or because they get a job promotion wich you feel you should have received. its all under the title "job skills". either you have them or not, its all up to you.

I learned Chinese (Mandarin). Why? Because I visited their country and was graciously accepted according to law. If I got 'out of line', they told me and I quickly worked to comply.
I've been called "fundamentally bad" (in Spanish) for not speaking Spanish. I refuse. I tell them I speak Chinese, Amharic, some Korean & Japanese and others but not Spanish and these illegals vilify me!

I am a native born legal American,I speak English,French-Cajun,Spanish and I am learning Japanese.I learned to speak Spanish as a child from people that worked for my parents.I learned to speak French -Cajun to be able to talk to some of my husbands older family members.And I am learning Japanese because I have business dealings in Japan.
All except English I learned by choice.
No American should ever be forced to learn any foreign language unless they want to.
