Why did immigrants 100 years ago willingly change their lives to suit America, yet today's immigrants...?

...demand that America change to suit their backwards cultures?

Answer:
That is an excellent question. I would love to hear an answer from some of these people demanding legal status, bilingual education and government services, waving Mexican flags and shouting "viva la raza". I would love to hear how they disntinguish themselves from the other immigrants.

I suspect that their leaders stuff their young minds with tales of stolen land, oppresive colonial powers and the nobility of poverty. That way they can distract them from their government's corruption and failure to provide education and jobs for the poor. It's soooooo much easier to blame the US for their problems and get them all riled up with anger, righteous indignation and a sense of entitlement. That way they will demand jobs and benefits from the US rather than demanding those things from their own governments.

The sad thing is that while these deluded fools keep trying to convince Americans of their fantasy, their home countries continue to rot in corruption and violence. By the time they figure out that we are not swallowing the "guilty colonial oppressor" lie they may have alienated any friendly Americans and provoked the unfriendly to violence. Meanwhile, their home countries are laughing all the way to the bank with their remittances and surplus money from jobs and services they don't have to supply. They got sold, plain and simple, they need to shut up and wise up.
Because America, sadly, has been completly willing to suit whatever they want... arg..
They think we stole their land. You can't change ignorant minds until they are educated.
Because those people you mention only want to destroy America.

The world view on success is tear down the successful to the unsuccessful. Never is it thought of to teach the unsuccessful how to be successful
Because a 100 years ago immigrants came to become Americans.

Todays immigrants come to Claim America. Just like Columbus did. They discovered America and now their going to rename it the "North American Union".
Immigrants 100 years ago were more appreciative and thankful to escape the lives they had in thier old countries, most of which were lives of poverty. They were eager for the opportunities that America Offered. Today's immigrants think America Owes them something and are only here for a free ride on our welfare system.
Racist
What are you talking about? It is well documented that the new wave immigrants were also prone to live enclaves, contributed to poor hygiene and crime, did not assimiliate to English or standard American culture. They just happened to come from Europe. It was during this era that people of Italian origin were considered to be black. There was also an argument a century ago about making German an official language.
I guess because assimilation is a word no longer translated out of the English language. And people wonder where racism comes from.
Immigrants of 100 years ago didn't make many demands, they were too happy to be allowed to come here.
They didn't make a lot of changes, many never learned to speak English, congregated in sections such as "little Italy" "China town" etc.
Immigrants may make all the demands they want, America is not likely to change to suit any other culture other than the one we have now. We like America's culture just the way it is, thank you!
the hispanic culture is very non-progressive and has a hard time assimilating anywhere, they are catered to in this coutry ,so they don't have any reason to assimilate
The Legal ones do Pledge allegiance to this country, on the other hand it is the Illegal aliens and their supporters that are demanding "so called rights with benefits". Not on my watch.
what makes youthink immigrants are not willing to assimilate into our society. because of what the media chooses to portray? have you sat down with every immigrant in the country and asked them this question. they may fly their flags and have pride for their country, but that does not mean they have not assimilated into our society. again generalizing a whole nationality based on a few is just plain ignorance on your part.
BECAUSE 100 YRS AGO--WE DIDN'T PAY ALL THEIR BILLS AND MEDICAL EXPENSES TO COME HERE---THEY HAD TO WORK FOR A LIVING--JUST LIKE WE DO!!!!!!!! EXCEPT THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY TAXES!!
Legal immigrants from 100 years ago cared about this country and their new home. They wanted to add to it's greatness and become a part of this country. They learned English and assimilated into society.

THIS IS A GENERALIZATION SO DON'T REPORT ME -- Illegal aliens criminals of today don't care about America. They don't care about it's laws and the fact that they are destroying this country. They only care about what they can get. They want America to fit into them and refuse to learn English. They don't assimilate. They sponge off the taxpayer.
Most third world illegals come to the U.S. for personal economic reasons. Most do not come to cherish our democratic system. Many so called "immigration rights" groups "fan the fire" with their rhetoric which encourages immigrants to preserve their culture and language at tax payers expense. Among some of these groups, the word "assimilation" is considered xenophobic. When ultimately illegal immigrants and/or their children do become voting citizens, many vote in blocks (Mexican-American, El Salvadoran-American, Guatemalan-American, etc.), not for the good of America, but for personal economic gain usually at the expense of another group.
Because they are ignorant, and arrogant, and they have liberals who will try to champion their cause. If you come to this country you should be willing to learn the language and use our money. If you cant handle that then you should stay home.
People back then were greatful to be here. There's a definate difference between "having difficulity" assimilating and REFUSING to. I've met many new immigrants and rule one was LEARN ENGLISH. They insisted their children speak English even at home. The parents insisted their children do good in school. I keep hearing.....oh the second generation will learn English. How, when there's been people here 15-25 years and can't speak English? They don't want their kids to speak English at home to "hang on to their culture". They are doing this push to make everyone else have to learn Spanish even when most people are already "bi-lingual". So the wonders of a second language is a line of poo or they'd be learning English.

Back a hundred years ago.....many of the immigrants couldn't read or write. So ya....they had difficulty. Way back when, people weren't used to the ideas of other cultures getting along. Many didn't know what a person from another country even looked like. That's why I say controlled immigration is necessary. It takes some adjusting both ways.

Problem I don't get.....we haven't had to "get used" to Mexicans or their culture because they've been here all along. It's just the older groups of Mexicans fit in while this new invasion seems determined to be different and stay different. It's like the more they know that you find something offensive......the more they intend to do it. I mean right down to simple basic courtesys.
