i have EAD(employment authorization document) .can i apply for social security number with this EAD card.else i must show where i'm working.just now i started searching for a job.i can't show where i'm working.but when i'm searching for the job they are asking for SSN.plz anyone help me.also i'm in J2 dependent visa.what are documents i must submit?.advice and suggestion to proceed further would be appreciated.thankyou

Yes, with an EAD you are eligible to apply for a SSN. you don't need to be working to be eligible, just eligible to work.
Go to the Social Security Administratin website
http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ and click on the form on the right of your screen SS-5. The instructions tell you what docs you need to establish eligibility. Take it to your local office. If you're missing anything, they'll let you know. good luck
