Why did the first major waves of Irish immigrants come to the USA?

Were they met with open arms? Did they have to adapt? Did they have to learn a new language? How are they doing now?

Answer:
Starvation.

No. This is where "Irish need not apply" came from.

Yes, and no. Most of them were empolyed for sheer muscle work, something they were already used to.

I don't think so.

While the majority of the first wave didn't really accomplish much other than being able to feed themselves, they eventually became a part of developing America and most (if not all) were assimiliated by the early 1900s.
The potato famine brought them here. Starvation is a strong force. yes they had to adapt and they were not much wanted either. Many were indentured servants. The Irish are quite strong now. Even in 1960 they were so proud to get an Catholic Irishman in the white house.
In the potato famine in 1845 they were all dying of hunger and disease so they went on "coffin ships*" to America and england. It was hard for them over there because it was alot different than Ireland was at the time.If they didnt know English they would have to learn it somehow.Ask an Irish-American----I'm pure Irish :D

*They were called coffin ships because so many people died on them
Ah yes...the myth of the potato "famine".

There was plenty food. Just the British stole it all.
Starvation. They were not that welcome. Slaves were considered more valuable. Yes they had to adapt and did and are doing well.

Everyone that came here had to adapt in one way or another.
because British try ed to starve them and to take their lands why you thing they fighting over there??
They came because they thought they can get free and unlimited land by overpowering native American and Mexican tribes. And they were right.
